Beaded
Necklaces
In
Ukraine beads were known since the Kyyv Rus' period. Beads were used to
decorate religious articles, hats, clothes and earrings. Ukrainian beaded
jewelry was very popular in the region of the Carpathian mountains.
Today there are three different kinds of beaded necklaces: gerdan, sylanka
and kryza. Gerdan is a beaded necklace which also due to its length covers
a part of chest. This necklace has a loop-like shape. At the front it’s
connected to a medallion. On Bukovyna necklaces were connected to a small
mirror. Ornaments, combination of colors, different shapes were made
through centuries. They reflect certain national characteristics and art
traditions.
Geometric ornaments, that originated in the past, are certain signs that
people invented in order to describe the world around them. Some of the
common ornaments were a line which meant earth, a wavy line - represented
water, fire was signified by cross etc.
All of our beaded gerdany are one-of-a-kind.

Carpathian Mountains using a traditional Ukrainian folk
pattern. Measures approximately 17" from top middle
bead to bottom middle bead when lying flat (34" in
total).
